Cock Combes Island is a rocky limestone island in the very southern part of the Mergui Archipelago. It is not accessible apart from the pictoresque green lagoon, which is completely enclosed by tropical carst rocks.
The access to the lagoon by kayak is timewise limited to the tides as the entry to the lagoon is completely filled with sea water in high tide. The lagoon itself, like the whole outer island rocks, are perfect habitat for hard corals. It requires quite some attention, when swimming or snorkeling the lagoon, to not break the corals as they are everywhere in the shallow water.
Visiting Cock Combes is only possible by boat. In low tide or mid-water, the lagoon can be entered either snorkeling and swimming or by Kayak. Scuba divers can access the lagoon any time, the entry point is max 1.5 Meters deep. Upmost care should be when passing the swim-through without a kayak. Corals are blooming everywhere around the lagoon entry, because the constant water flow through this channel bring in nutrients constantly.
Inside the lagoon lives a resident black tip shark. As these sharks are quite shy, it’s just the first ones of a group who might have to see a chance to see it. Once the shark is aware of alien invaders into its realm, it goes hiding until the strange creatures have left the lagoon.
